Payroll Engine - Gabem

Gabem Management Ltd has been handling administration, tax and payroll for thousands of contractors for more than 10 years - setting up tax-efficient umbrella companies, and providing self employed payment methods.

Brief

At Softworld HR & Payroll 2006 a delegation from Gabem approached Avco Systems to establish whether we could develop a bespoke payroll engine to automate the calculation of thousands of payslips, which up until then were calculated using a generic "off the shelf" software package. Due to the increase in the volume of payslips being produced weekly, the "off the shelf" software was reaching the end of its usefulness. So Gabem commissioned a specialised custom solution, and that was the Avco Payroll Engine. Avco completed the development on schedule and to a very high standard.

Outcome

The Avco Payroll Engine is built as a web service and is stateless (so has no internal database), it takes an XML feed from Gabem’s accounting system and is capable of calculating tens of thousands of contractors payslips per hour, including all statutory payments, pensions, expenses, bonuses, etc. Because it is stateless the two copies running at separate sites form a completely resilient solution with no recovery required. The scope of the project was expanded to allow the service to be used by third parties as a pay per use payroll service.
